USS Summer School Successfully Held at IUE

The "Urban Science and Sustainability (USS)" Summer School was successfully conducted from July 6 to 15 at the Institute of Urban Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IUE-CAS). This intensive program was jointly organized by multiple prestigious institutions including IUE-CAS, the State Key Laboratory of Regional and Urban Ecological Security, the Sustainable Urban Systems Section of the International Society for Industrial Ecology, the "Urban Health and Wellbeing Programme" of the International Science Council, and the International Society for Spatial Methods.   

Focusing on the theme of "Big Data and AI-Driven Urban Sustainable Development," the summer school brought together 40 outstanding graduate students from 14 countries and regions across Asia, Africa and Europe, including China, the UK, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Thailand, Myanmar, Zimbabwe and Rwanda.

The 10-day program featured:   

  • 25 cutting-edge keynote lectures by leading experts   

  • 4 intensive group workshops and presentations   

  • 2 field excursions to urban innovation sites   

Participants engaged in dynamic exchanges with renowned scholars and industry professionals, exploring innovative approaches and practical opportunities for AI-enabled urban development. The program provided a unique platform for international dialogue on leveraging emerging technologies to address urban sustainability challenges.   

This summer school represents a significant step in fostering global collaboration and capacity building for the next generation of urban sustainability researchers and practitioners. The organizers plan to continue this annual program to further strengthen international academic exchanges in urban science.
